FOREWORD

On behalf of the European Atherosclerosis Society we were fortunate to organize the 73rd Annual Congress in Salzburg. This beautiful city, which is located in the heart of Europe has a long lasting tradition in bringing together artists, musicians and scientists from different countries. Mozart was born in Salzburg, and Paracelsus, the famous physician of the Middle Ages is said to have spent the final years of his life here. Year after year, this marvellous city is among the top destinations of international tourism. We are convinced it is just the right place for bringing the leading experts in atherosclerosis research together. Although scientists are often believed to have no interest in art and music, we know this isn’t true. And it is the arts and the music that Austrians have been cultivating and they enjoy to share their traditions with others.

What do atherosclerosis and researchers searching for a cure for this disease have in common? The former is multifactorial, the latter is coming from a multitude of disciplines and works in an ever increasing number of speciality fields. This is reflected by the wide variety of topics discussed at the 73rd EAS Congress. Although lipid lowering therapy, especially statins have shown tremendous benefit in reducing mortality and cardiovascular morbidity, coronary artery disease remains the biggest killer in industrialized nations. Therapy for CAD ranges from simple diet to highly specialized treatments like extracorporeal plasma delipidation. Basic research and resulting clinical trials have tought us so much about atherosclerosis but now we are facing new challenges: Targets, pleiotropic effects, interactions of substances, too many novel markers for atherosclerosis and gene therapy to name just a few. Statins in fact were the focus of several workshops and educational symposia. This 73rd EAS congress brought together the leading experts in the field of atherosclerosis research and cardiology presenting brand new data of their most recent investigations. Scientists and physicians from many different parts of the world were congregating and sharing their different views and opinions on this challenging subject. For the first time, representatives of Ethnomedicine and Medical Anthropology were invited and have given new insights from a different perspective in a special workshop on Ethnomedicine and obesity.

Amongst many others, genetic factors of atherosclerosis, the homeostasis of cell cholesterol, immunological aspects of atherosclerosis, hemostatic factors, lipid oxidation and risk factors of diabetes mellitus were only some of the topics for workshops, plenary lectures and poster presentations.

This book is a document of science presented at the 73rd EAS Congress and is a selection of invited lectures and free communications presented in Salzburg.
