FOREWORD
Dear Colleagues!
This volume of "Asthma: From Genes to Clinical
Management" contains basic reports delivered at the XVII World Asthma
Congress that was held in St.-Petersburg, Russia, on July 5-8, 2003.
Asthma is a problem of global character. Its prevalence
around the world as well as its severity and mortality rate have made
bronchial asthma one of the most socially significant diseases of today
and the nearest future. Asthma as no other pathology demands consolidation
of various specialists – allergologists, immunologists, pulmonologists,
pediatricians etc. INTERASMA is a Society that includes various medical
specialty areas joining together all those who care patients, regardless
of their medical field of origin. Only their concerted efforts can warrant
successful solution of many problems, which cannot be solved by individual
specialists when working separately.
The world’s leading experts in the field of asthma
accepted our invitation to join us in St.-Petersburg and attend the XVII
World Asthma Congress. They represented the International Association of
Asthmology (INTERASMA), World Allergy Organization – International
Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (WAO-IAACI), European
Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), European
Respiratory Society (ERS), American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and
Immunology (AAAAI), American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI),
American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), American Thoracic Society
(ATS), Asia Pacific Association of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (APAACI),
The Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR), Latin American Society of
Allergy and Immunology, Latin American Thoracic Association (ALAT), some
other international organizations and international programs GINA (Global
Initiative for Asthma), ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma),
GLORIA (Global Resources in Allergy).
Their reports were included into the Congress Final
Program. Besides, within the framework of the XVII World Asthma Congress a
special plenary session on the GLORIA Program was held together with the
WAO-IAACI.
Most of the reports presented at the Congress are
published in this volume.
I sincerely hope that papers presented in this volume
will allow you to obtain new information on the recent advances in the
basic knowledge and clinical management of asthma.
