8th International Mycological Congress

(August 20-25, 2006, Cairns, Australia)

FOREWORD

It has been a challenge to design and bring to fruition a congress that can meet the high standards set by previous International Mycological Congresses. We hope that we provided you with a congress experience that was stimulating, rewarding and enjoyable.

We have endeavoured to develop an outstanding program, thanks to our national and international scientific program organising committee, and your scientific input and participation. There are nine pre-congress workshops to choose from, and within the congress program, there is an internationally recognised invited plenary speaker each day. The daily scientific program encompassed 56 symposia and 4 proffered sessions, which included a combination of invited speakers and presenters chosen from submitted abstracts, and an extensive range of scientific poster presentations. We trust that there was something of interest to all mycologists in our large and varied scientific program.

It is our pleasure to bring you summaries of a selection of oral and poster presentations presented at the Eighth International Mycological Congress (IMC8) of the International Mycological Association from 20–25 August 2006 in Cairns, Australia, which was hosted by the Australasian Mycological Society. On behalf of the Organizing Committee we would like to thank everybody who has taken an active part in this unique international event that tried to promotes all aspects of Mycology.

IMC8 in Cairns has been welcomed every contribution from those devoted to the progress of Mycology. There has never been a more exciting time in Mycology. The enormous expansion, which has taken place in our understanding of mycological diversity over recent years, has been accompanied by the development of new technologies. These include fungal genomics and proteomics as well as ever increasing efforts to assemble the fungal tree of life. This will bring a better knowledge of the evolution of and biodiversity in the fungal kingdom, safer treatment of fungal diseases and provide better ways to harness fungi for positive uses in agricultural, food and medical sciences.

IMC8 was the first International Mycological Congress, which was held in the Southern Hemisphere, an area of the world whose scientists have made great contributions to many fields of Mycology.

Cairns as an international gateway to Australia, and enjoys close ties with the Asia Pacific region. With its combined World Heritage listed attractions of the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropic Rainforests, Cairns offered a uniquely tropical experience to visiting mycologists from around the world. We hope that the warm hospitality of Queensland, the tropical north-east of Australia and, in particular the pleasant atmosphere of Cairns, will stay in the memory of many Mycologists from around the World including students, researchers, academics, practitioners, industry representatives and all those who deal with fungi.

Thank you for coming and we trust you found your visit enjoyable and rewarding.

With our very best wishes,

Associate Prof. Wieland Meyer
Chair IMC8 Organizing Committee

Dr. Ceri Pearce
Vice-Chair IMC8 Organizing Committee
